The first photo on the homepage was taken by Tim Sutton. It shows a beautiful sunrise along the Tararua Range taken from Mt Hector and it illustrates why people love to walk in the Tararuas.

8 hours after this photo was taken, conditions changed markedly. Visibility reduced to around 50m, with heavy mist, very strong cold winds and drizzle. This shows how quickly a beautiful tramp in the Tararuas can turn into a nightmare for the inexperienced or unprepared tramper.
